The Meherrin River Regional Jail is a state-of-the-art adult detention facility that serves three member jurisdictions: Brunswick County, Dinwiddie County, and Mecklenburg County. We have two facilities. Our main facility is located in Alberta, VA and has a housing capacity of 697 offenders and our satellite facility, located in Boydton, VA has a housing capacity for 80 offenders.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 is a federal law established to support the elimination and prevention of sexual assault and sexual misconduct in correctional systems. PREA addresses both inmate-to-inmate sexual assault and staff-to-inmate sexual assault. The Meherrin River Regional Jail fully supports the guidelines set forth in this law and has ZERO-TOLERANCE for any and all incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct in accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003. New Lobby Hours (effective 01/10/2022)
Effective 1/3/2022, the Lobby hours will be 8:00am – 4:30pm. The Lobby will remain closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Incoming Mail Changes:
As of January 10, 2022 we transitioned to a mail scanning service. However, effective Nov. 1, 2022, all correspondence from family and friends needs to be addressed as below (to ensure delivery, the envelope must include the following information):

As of September 23, 2022, we will no longer accept books or subscriptions from a publisher. Publications received after September 23, 2022 will be returned at the offender's expense or will be destroyed.
Effective March 1, 2022, we will no longer accept money orders through the mail. All incoming mail and money orders for offenders will be returned to the sender with the exception of legal mail and books/subscriptions from a publisher.

MRRJ Just Like Home is a program to send a food gift to an offender. The goal of this program is to improve morale and remind them that they are remembered by people 'back home'. Orders are securely received and prepared by our Kitchen Staff.
The Virginia VINE System is a service through which victims of crime can use the telephone or internet to search for information regarding the custody status of their offender and to register to receive telephone and e-mail notification when the offender's custody status changes. The VINE toll-free number for the Virginia VINE system is (800) 467-4943. This service is provided to assist Victims of Crime who have a right to know about their offender's custody status.
If your offender is housed in our facility, you can search our current offenders and click on the Victim Notification link. You will be redirected to the Virginia VINE site so you can register for notifications.
You may also search the VINE database for any offender regardless of the facility in which they are housed.

The Meherrin River Regional Jail, which is a joint effort between Brunswick, Dinwiddie and Mecklenburg Counties, opened on July 1, 2012. The $52 million facility includes a satellite jail in Mecklenburg County and employs approximately 189 people, creating much needed jobs for the area.
The Meherrin River Regional Jail is located in the Alberta area of Brunswick County, Virginia. The facility consists of two buildings including a support building (administration, food service, laundry, intake and booking, medical, visitation, etc.) and a housing building (offender dormitories and cells, recreation, and security areas). In addition, a firearms range is located behind the Jail so that security employees can practice and qualify in marksmanship.
The Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority expressed the desire to incorporate high performance and sustainable strategies into the project. This project achieved certification under the U. S. Green Building Council's LEED certification.
The 697-bed Meherrin River Regional Jail is located along U.S. Route 1 near Alberta. It houses both male and female offenders from Dinwiddie, Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties. A Satellite Facility is located just off of Highway 58 in Boydton, VA and is an 80-bed facility for pre-trial and work release offenders. The Satellite Facility also houses male and female offenders.
Crystal Willett was appointed Superintendent of Meherrin River Regional Jail. She was originally hired by the Authority as the Finance Director of the Jail. Brent Wright was appointed Deputy Superintendent of the Jail. Major Wright comes to the jail from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
